What a dead element is actually telling you
Electricity has to make a full trip: from the breaker panel, through the control, into the element, and back. Break that trip anywhere and the burner goes cold. The good news is that one dead burner usually means the fault is local — that element, its plug-in socket, or its switch. When every burner is dead but the clock and lights still work, we look higher up at the power feed. Storms around here trip half a panel and leave you with a live display and no heat. Note exactly which burners work and which don't. That single detail narrows the search fast.
Cause one: the element or its socket
On coil-style cooktops, the burner unplugs from a receptacle block under the trim ring. Coils burn out. They also arc at the plug end, pitting the metal and leaving a loose, sooty connection that heats and quits. You can often see it — dark scorching on the prongs, a burner that sits crooked, a blistered spot on the coil itself. On smooth-top glass ranges, the radiant element underneath opens up with age and simply stops glowing. Either way, this is the cheapest family of fault and the one we check first, because it accounts for a large share of single-burner calls.
Cause two: the infinite switch behind the knob
The knob doesn't just dial power up and down. It runs a switch that cycles the element on and off to hold the setting. When that switch wears out, you get odd behavior: the burner runs full blast on every setting, or it heats for a bit then never comes back, or it does nothing at all while the indicator light stays lit. Smooth-tops sometimes use an electronic control board instead, and a surge during a spring storm can knock out one burner's circuit while the rest survive. Both parts live behind the front panel, so testing them is our job, not yours.
Safe checks you can do right now
Start at the breaker. An electric range uses a double breaker; one half can trip while the other holds, which kills some burners and leaves others fine. Push it fully off, then back on. Next, on a coil cooktop, let everything cool completely, then lift the suspect coil out and swap it with a working one of the same size. If the problem follows the coil, you need an element. If the dead spot stays put, the fault is in the socket or switch. Look for scorch marks while you're in there. Stop at the trim ring — don't lift the cooktop or pull panels.

We cut power at the breaker, then meter the element for continuity and the switch for output on each setting. That tells us whether the part is open, shorted, or just dirty at the connection. We check the receptacle block for heat damage and the wiring behind it for burned insulation, which is common after an arcing plug. On smooth-tops we test the radiant element and the control board separately so you're not paying to replace a board that's fine. Usually yes, if the dead one shows no scorching, smoke, or burning smell. If you saw sparks or smell hot plastic, shut the range breaker off and leave it off until we look at it.
Why did one burner die right after a thunderstorm?
