Built-In Microwave Repairs

Whether a microwave is worth fixing comes down to three things we can check in one visit: what broke, whether the part is still made, and how the unit's been running. Call us and tell us the symptom. Maybe it quit heating, or the door latch sticks, or the turntable sits dead while the light still glows. You're in the kitchen wondering whether to spend money on a service call or go shopping instead. Fair question. Here's how we think it through before anybody spends a dime.

Age matters, but not the way people think

A ten-year-old countertop unit is usually a throwaway. A built-in or over-the-range model is a different animal. It's sized to a cabinet opening, wired in, and sometimes vented through the wall or roof. Swapping it can mean trim kits, cabinet work, and a duct that doesn't line up. That changes the math. We look at how the unit has been running overall. If the door has been slammed for years and the cabinet is scorched around the vents, that tells us something. If it heated fine until last Tuesday, age alone isn't a reason to give up on it.

What actually broke says more than the age

Some faults are straightforward. Door switches, membrane touchpads, turntable motors, cooling fans, control boards, and vent fan assemblies all get replaced as a matter of course, and those calls usually make sense. Other faults sit deeper in the high-voltage side of the cabinet. Those parts are heavier, harder to source, and the labor climbs. We also see storm damage across the Mid-South. A summer surge can take out a control board and leave everything else fine. Good repair. A unit that arcs inside, smells burnt, or has a scorched cavity wall is telling you it's done.

Parts availability decides a lot of calls

Manufacturers stop making boards and touchpads for older models. Sometimes the part number is discontinued and no aftermarket equivalent exists. When we can't get a good part, repair isn't on the table, and we'll say so plainly instead of chasing it for weeks. Common models from the last several years usually have parts moving. Odd imports, discontinued lines, and built-ins that came with the house in a builder package can be harder. We check availability before we order anything, so you're not sitting with a dead microwave waiting on a part that never ships.

How we work the call at your house

We start with what you noticed. Does the display light? Does the fan run, or does it hum and then stop? Then we test power at the outlet, check the door latches and switches, and read any error codes. From there we know whether it's a small part or something in the high-voltage section. We tell you what failed, whether the part is available, and roughly what the work involves. Then you decide. Nobody talks you into anything. If we think replacement is the smarter call, we'll say that out loud.

When replacing honestly wins

There are clear cases. Burn marks or holes inside the cavity mean the unit isn't safe to keep running. A cracked or warped door that won't seal is a hard stop. Several failures at once, like a bad board plus a dead fan plus a broken latch, usually points toward a new unit, and so does a discontinued part with no substitute. We'll also flag it when a unit has been repaired several times and keeps coming back. You deserve the honest version. Call us, tell us what it's doing, and we'll help you sort it out.

Safe checks only on your end: verify the breaker, make sure the door closes fully, and never open the cabinet yourself.

Built-In Microwave Repairs — common questions

My microwave runs but doesn't heat food. Is that fixable?

Often, yes. That symptom points to the high-voltage side or a door switch, and both are common diagnoses. Whether it's worth fixing depends on the specific part, its availability for your model, and the condition of the unit overall.

Can a power surge damage a microwave?

It can. Storm season across Tennessee and neighboring states takes out control boards regularly, and the rest of the unit is often fine. A board replacement is routine work when the part is still available for your model.

Is an over-the-range microwave harder to replace than repair?

Usually more involved. It's mounted to studs, wired in, and vented through a duct or a recirculating filter. Sizes and vent locations vary by model, so a swap can mean cabinet adjustments that a repair avoids.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and tell us what you hear, smell, or see. Buzzing, leaking, no heat. Plain talk is fine. We'll ask a few questions and set a visit window.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician shows up in the window, pulls the unit out, and tests it. No guessing games. We explain what failed and why, in words that make sense on your back porch.

  3. Step 3

    We fix it

Common parts ride with us, so a lot of repairs finish on that first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you plainly and set the return date before we pull out of your driveway.

Why homeowners call us

  • Storm-season surge damageLightning and blinking power hurt control boards. You get an oven that lights up but won't heat, or a washer that quits mid-cycle. We test boards and wiring before we replace anything, so you know what the surge actually took out.
  • Clay dust and lintRed clay dust and lint choke dryer vents and condenser coils. That's where long dry times and a hot laundry room come from, and it's why a fridge runs nonstop. We check airflow every visit, because a clogged vent kills a good machine slowly.
  • Straight talk, no runaroundWe tell you what's wrong and what it takes to fix. If a machine is worn past sense, we say that too, and you decide. No pressure and no jargon. We don't dress up an upsell as advice.
  • Independent and localWe're a Nashville crew, not a call center. As an independent shop we repair all major brands. Call us and you get a real person, somebody who knows the roads we drive.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
